Dr. Frederick R. Bieber's expertise is in fetal malformations and perinatal genetics. His work in the Division involves evaluation of the malformed conceptus. He also has expertise in forensic genetics with an interest in human identification. He served as a member of the U.S. DOJ World Trade Center Kinship Panel, assisting the OCME in the identification of victims of the September 11th attack, and is an appointed member of the Hurricane Victims DNA Identification Group (KVDIEG) involved in the DNA-based identification of Katrina victims. Dr. Bieber is a commissioned medical officer in the United States Army Reserve and a sworn reserve Deputy Sheriff in Middlesex County, Massachusetts. In 2003 Dr. Bieber was appointed by Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney to serve as Co-Chair of the Massachusetts Governor’s Council on Capital Punishment. He has participated in the publication of over 100 articles, chapters, and books relating to human genetics, forensics or law.
